Chapter 11

Darius opened the door quietly and stepped out onto the gallery. There was no one in sight. He made his way down to the end of his gallery and crossed over to the other side of the house. There was no sound from the parlor as he went past, and no sound from Frieda’s room. Darius tapped softly on Bronwyn’s door.

Bronwyn opened it in a second. She held the door open wide; after he stepped inside, she shut the door as silently as she could, and then slid the bolt in place to lock it.

“There,” she said with satisfaction, and then she turned to Darius with her arms held wide.

Darius embraced her, holding her tightly to him. He could feel her heart beating wildly; her eyes were bright, but he couldn’t tell if it was from nervousness or excitement or both.

He pulled away a little bit. “Are you sure you want to do this, Bronwyn? Are you sure you’re ready?”

“Yes!” Bronwyn said. “I’m sure, Darius. I’m very sure.”

“You know it can hurt. Sometimes the first time is painful for a woman.”

“I know. Ramona explained all that. I don’t care. I want you, Darius.”

Darius put aside any reservations and kissed her passionately. He ran his hands over her body. She wore a thin nightgown, and he could feel that she had nothing on under it.

They pulled apart only long enough to tug each other’s clothes off. Darius’s heart was pounding once they were both naked. He pulled her tightly against him and let himself fall onto the bed.

Bronwyn pulled free, and for a moment he thought he had scared her.

“Is anything wrong?” he asked.

She shook her head. “Aren’t we—aren’t we supposed to turn down the lamp?”

Darius smiled. “There are no rules, sweetheart. Do you want me to turn down the lamp?”

Bronwyn nodded, and Darius got up and dimmed the light so that only a very faint illumination shone in the room. He could see Bronwyn only as a hazy, white shape. He slid into bed beside her and pressed his body against hers.

Bronwyn gave a little gasp, half anticipation, half surprise.

Darius had a sudden qualm. “Sweetheart, you do know what happens, don’t you—what happens when a man and a woman lie together, I mean?”

“Yes, yes, I do. Don’t worry. I’m not afraid.”

Darius felt his heart swell. He had never been so happy. Her put his arms around her and began to explore her body in ways he had dreamed of for months.

Bronwyn gave a little sigh and said nothing else for quite some time.
